WORKSHOP DETAILS:

Los Angeles based fine art and commercial photographer Lorne Resnick, winner of the 2005 Travel Photographer of the Year award, will guide this 4-day workshop. From his first book of photographs, “Live in Concert: 10 years of Rock and Roll”, published in 1987, to his latest work-in-progress, fine art coffee table book Cuba Dreaming, Resnick has always strived to create images that probe beyond the everyday facade to capture the essential meaning and character of his subjects. His pursuit of unique and compelling images has led him around the world to such places as: Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Greenland, Cuba, China, across Europe and 22 countries in Africa. Resnick’s striking commercial and fine art images have been exhibited in galleries across Europe and America, and have been used commercially for annual reports, billboards, television, web sites and for worldwide advertising campaigns. He currently has nine fine art posters published of his travel work.

Along with the actual shooting, there will be time for critiques of images made during the program, portfolio reviews and discussions. Topics will include:

CREATIVITY:

-The creative process
-The travel story arc: What to shoot and how to shoot it
-Shooting with the current visually overloaded, sophisticated audience in mind
-Editorial (local culture) vs. art directed shoots
-Using unusual lenses/cameras/techniques (tilt/shift, wide aperture, Diana, blurs, etc).
-The Eiffel Tower paradox: How do you shoot an original image of an iconographic object?
sWhy do people keep shooting images of something that has been shot to death - because the images keep on selling.
-Critical analysis of photos
-The ingredients that make a winning image

WORKFLOW:

-Time Management
-Equipment selection (camera, lenses, digital storage options, software, printers, etc.)
-Raw digital capture
-Dealing with model releases
-D.A.M. (digital asset management)
-Calibration

-Image processing (batch actions, special effects)
-Submitting images
-Copyrighting images
-Portfolio development (using inkjet printers and/or Print on Demand publishers, image selection, image pairing and flow)

MARKET SYNERGY:

-What markets are available as outlets for travel work?
-How to shoot with market synergy in mind (to sell the same image in several different markets at the same time)
-How to optimize your travel shooting to take advantage of different markets

Among the markets and topics discussed will be:

-Stock (shooting trends, idea generation, image tracking, agencies, submission requirements, digital capture requirements,
sroyalty free vs. rights managed, selling stock yourself)
-Fine Art (print sizes, galleries, edition size, pricing, signing prints, certificates)
-Posters (submissions, contracts, proofing)
-Commercial (bidding travel jobs, delivering images, client education, bidding/estimating software)
-Book publishers (building a dummy book, generating a publishing proposal, financing)
-Website (building the site, optimizing images, search engine optimization)

At the end of course all participants will receive a CD of resources including:

-A database of more than 400 contacts and names (poster companies, art galleries, museums, stock agencies, magazines, sbook publishers, tourist boards and a list of print on demand publishers)
