Thousands of images were received from ninety-two countries. The nominated photographers were selected by a who’s who Judging Panel from the international photography community, including Christie’s (New York), National Geographic (Washington) and Fox Broadcasting Company (Los Angeles). The Panel reviewed the images online over an eight week period. “The Masters Cup celebrates photographers who operate at the highest levels of their craft,” said the awards Creative Director, Basil O’Brien.

PDN has teamed up with National Geographic Traveler in order to unearth the most unique and unseen imagery from photographers around the world. By viewing these winning images, each photographer’s distinct interpretation of travel photography becomes completely clear. With PDN’s World in Focus, we hope to create a venue that showcases the extraordinary work photographers create both on assignment and for themselves.

The BLACK AND WHITE SPIDER AWARDS are the leading international award honoring excellence in black and white photography. Thousands of images were received from over sixty countries and the nominated photographers were selected by a who’s who Judging Panel from the international photography community, including Magnum Photos, LIFE Magazine, Tate Gallery, and the Leica Photo Gallery. The Panel reviewed the images online over an eight-week period and Lorne Resnick’s “Sahara Desert #2,” an exceptional image, received a high percentage of votes overall.

“The Spider Awards celebrate photographers who operate at the highest levels of their craft,” said the awards Creative Director, Basil O’Brien. “Lorne Resnick’s entry certainly represents black and white imaging at its finest, and we’re pleased to present him with the Black and White Spider Award.”

The Art of Photography Show is an international exhibition of photographic art. This year, the show took place from April 20 to June 4, 2006, at the elegant two-story gallery within the Lyceum Theatre, located in the historic Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego, CA. The Lyceum is an ideal venue for exhibiting a large showcase of photographic art. Admission was free and open to the public. An opening reception gala for the Art of Photography Show was held on Saturday, April 22. This presentation of world-class photographic art was impressive, to say the least. A total of 9,517 photographic entries were submitted by artists from 35 countries around the world. Judging this exhibit was Arthur Ollman, director of the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA, www.mopa.org). He selected 104 images – the best of the best. These images represent an exceptional presentation of photographic art from around the globe.

Judged by a nationally representative jury of distinguished designers, art directors and photographers, each year’s Photography Annual features the best photography used for advertising, design, editorial and any other area of the communication arts. Of the 9,000 entries to the 47th Photography Annual, only 173 were accepted, making the Photography Annual the most exclusive major photography competition in the world.
